Matt Kalman: Have you no sense of decency, sir?

So I'm reading through my RSS feed reader and an item of interest popped up: "Column: Horton has to show more, and Florida would be a place to start." Yeah, you're not reading it wrong. It's really a slag on Mr. New Bruin, Mr. Fought Dion Phaneuf, Mr. point-per-game until Monday when everyone sucked. So, Matt, what have you got for us about this season's possible 7th man award winner?

Appearance-wise, the Florida fans (however many of them bother to show up Wednesday night in Sunrise, Fla.) probably won’t recognize Nathan Horton.
Well, they actually might, since he's only been gone a couple months. He was one of their stars for the last 5 years. I'm sure Ottawa fans don't remember Zdeno Chara and Phil Kessel plays in Boston with barely a whisper mentioned about him, right?
Unless something changes overnight, he’ll probably be sporting the same grin he has been wearing ever since he first joined the Bruins and escaped what he obviously deemed to be an ill-fitting situation with the Panthers last June.
Likely, yes, but the only reason Florida fans won't recognize that is that when Nathan Horton smiles, he turns people to stone. So there will be some statues in and around the Sunrise arena that recognize the grin but the rest are luckily far enough away or conveniently dressed like tarps.
However, there are evidently two Nathan Hortons when it comes to on-ice performance, and if the wrong one takes the ice for the Bruins it could bring back all-too-familiar memories for the small but loyal Florida fan base.
Finally, Matthew gets to the meat of his argument: Nathan Horton has played 19 games for the Bruins and has failed to win the Stanley Cup in each of those 19 games. Nevermind the fact that he's clicking on the top line or leading the Bruins in points and up until Monday night's snoozefest (literally, I was asleep) he was a point-per-game player. Let's see what he has to say here:
Horton’s numbers have been excellent through 19 games, as he has recorded 18 points, including eight goals. He leads the team in scoring and is on pace to top the 30-goal mark, which was what the Bruins optimistically set for his potential production when the season started. En route to that solid amount of production, Horton has enjoyed nights of physical forechecking and work along the boards, in addition to diligent backchecking. That’s the Nathan Horton the Bruins bragged about after they picked him up.
Wait, isn't that exactly what I just said? So what's the problem here, Matt? Did he refuse you an interview or not bite on some bait? What's the deal?
But then there are nights when the other Nathan Horton shows up — nights like Monday in Tampa, where Horton failed to record a point or even a shot on net. It was the third time Horton failed to shoot on goal this season, but this time his lack of an attempt led to his extending his season-worst goal-less stretch to four games.
Even when Gretzky set the scoring record for what will probably be all time, he still had a couple nights without a point. That's right. En route to 215 points, a record that will stand for a long long time, he had a couple of off nights. Now, I'm not saying that Horton is Gretzky - far from it. I am saying that Horton wasn't brought in to not only be point-per-game but also put the Bruins on his back every night and drag them to victory. Let's see how much further down the rabbit hole Kalman falls:
In the aftermath of Horton’s two prior shot-less outings, he bounced back well. He scored a goal at home against Washington Oct. 21 and did the same on the Capitals’ home ice Nov. 5. He was still a bit gun-shy in those two contests with just two shots on net in both, but at least he cashed in on his chances. We’ll find out Wednesday night how Horton responds to maybe his worst game as a member of the Bruins against the Lightning.
Horton played his 19th-best game as a Bruin Monday night. He went 0-0-0 and was a -1. He's been a minus in three games this season, including that November 5th game mentioned above when he was a -2. The other was his debut game as a Bruin where he had 2 goals and Rask had a spot of bad luck starting out. So yeah, his -1 rating in a 3-1 loss might be his worst game. Ask Thomas Kopecky about bad games (-5 in 17:12 of ice time) this year, maybe. 0-0-0 and a -1? Well, that could be a lot worse.
Not only didn’t Horton manage a shot on goal, he seemed disinterested. In fact, he looked like the player the Panthers carried the last couple of years who earned a reputation for passion-less hockey. Horton’s last seven games, actually, have left little to be desired. He has scored just once in that stretch and averaged just 1.57 shots per game. Shots on net don’t have to be an end-all indicator of solid play — and Horton did assist on all three Milan Lucic goals last week against the Panthers — but there has been little else to Horton’s play over the same stretch.
I heard he told the caterer he wouldn't feed the roast beef to his dog, either. Excuse me, I've got to go find my eyeballs - they seem to have rolled out of my head. Be back in a minute. Here, while I'm out, watch this video of Horton playing "passion-less hockey":
Oh, thank goodness! I found them! Under the fridge. Gotta get the dust off and we're back in time to savor what Andy Brickley just said about Horton while we read on in Kalman's atrocity:
Prior to this string of games, he averaged 2.5 shots per game in the 12 contests that featured his first seven goals. When you figure he averaged 2.45 shots per game on the way to 20 goals last season and 2.65 shots in 2006-07 (a 31-goal year), it’s obvious he’s only at his best when he’s putting that lethal wrister to use more often.
And in 08-09 he averaged 1.96 and scored 22. Yes, he obviously scores more when he shoots more but it's not a bad thing to have a high shooting percentage. Average around the league (by team) should be around 10...Horton's lowest percentages were 12.6 last year and 12.7 the year before when he scored 27.
Horton has to now prove that he can take the necessary steps to prevent an extended stretch of lifeless play from turning into an all-out slump. When he’s not scoring, he has to be creating chances, has to be making things happen with his body. That’s what he said he was ready to do on a consistent basis right after the trade and all through training camp. Now it’s time to show it. The Bruins don’t need another high-priced passenger in their lineup.
Passenger. Yup. That's what Kalman just said. He called Horton a "Passenger." Or called it into question, at least. Say what you will about Nathan Horton (unless you feel like writing up some dumb character assassination crap like Matthew has done here). Mr. Kalman, I believe you have locker room access. Can you do something for me? Can you go in there and ask Milan Lucic (or anyone else) if they think Nathan Horton's been a "passenger" to the Bruins?

While we're at it, who are the high-priced passengers in the lineup right now? You did say "another" so let's figure out who it is. Highest priced forward is Patrice Bergeron, and I don't think he's exactly having a bad year. He slotted in just fine up top with Krejci out, which actually helped Wheeler prove he's a better player than we thought. Next up for forwards is Milan Lucic (ha!), then Marc Savard (arguably, yes, but ask again when he's on the ice), Michael Ryder (having a hell of a contract year), then Horton and Krejci. Nope, no passengers there. Everyone else is Seguin (rookie doing work), Marco Sturm (See also Marc Savard), and a bunch of forwards making under 3 million. None of the forwards are "high-priced passengers."

On Defense, there are two guys making over 3 million: Norris-trophy winner and Captain Zdeno Chara (4-5-9 +10 - not a passenger) and Dennis "Dikembe" Seidenberg (7 assists, +5, 4th in the league in Blocked Shots - not a passenger). Nope. Okay, so it's gotta be a goalie, right? Sure! Tim Thomas is earning his cash money and Rask is being paid like a backup and soaking up losses (including one where he played a 3-1 period and got the loss). So, nope, not seeing any passengers here right now.
There’d be no better place to do that than in the BankAtlantic Center. The day after Horton and the Bruins downed those Panthers in Boston last week, he contemplated what playing in front of the Florida crowd might be like when asked about the possibilities.
Ah yes, the pre-written storyline. Player returns to team that drafted him and had him for a while. Gaborik back to Minnesota, Kesselmania, and now Horton to Florida. I bet he says something like "I appreciate the fans, and I have great memories, and I want to come home with the win" or something like that.
"I don’t know what it’s going to be like. It’s different. Obviously, it’s nice when you get the win against them. But it’s definitely going to be a little bit weird being down there,” said Horton.
Horton spitting mad fire. Throwing big heat against Flori-what? Oh, okay. Maybe he didn't. Whatever, he pulled from a different quotebook.
It’ll be a lot weirder if Horton goes out and plays the spirited hockey he started the season with. The folks in Sunrise probably don’t remember what that looks like. And the Bruins don’t want that Nathan Horton to become a distant memory.
It actually would be pretty weird if he came out and scored like crazy. In each of the afore-mentioned returns, the returning scorer put down a paltry 0-0-0 in front of his former hometown crowd. Of course, Gretzky broke a scoring record in Edmonton but I don't think it was his first game back.

As for that last part, Matthew? I think Mr. Joseph N. Welch, head of the council for the Army during the McCarthy hearings said it best:

"You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"

Well, Matthew? Do you?

Today's STH press conference recap

So I sat in on the Chiarelli conference call today with season ticket holders, and live-tweeted it. I'm collecting what I said there here, because it's easier to find later I figured not everyone who reads this follows me on twitter. I'm at HBAdventure, by the way. Here it is:

Chiarelli uses "identity" to mean "winning," p.s.

Chiarelli: Teemu Selanne was asked about, but wasn't available. Stempniak, etc, would have been "marginal" impact.

Chiarelli: Mcquaid, Caron, maybe Hamill, Colburne, TOR draft pick could all be full-time Bruins next year, but need vets to push them to be competitive.

Chiarelli: draft position will define offseason moves. if hall/seguin come to Boston, will be looked to to be high-scoring rookies. If not, free agency or trade.
The free agent market sucks this year, so let's not overpay.
Chiarelli: "I promise you that [last year's identity] will be back" "I challenged them to get it back this year" breaking: might make moves

Chiarelli: defensemen haven't been scoring nearly as much, knows bruins need to score, will "do something from a personnel perspective"

Chiarelli: kobasew is a high-character kid, but injury-prone. Bruins needed help on pk. "Chara growing everyday" Good question wickedbruinsfan

Chiarelli: players weren't ready mentally to live up to expectations at home. Bruins have 2 sports psychologists. Have done home-game hotel stays a couple times.

Chiarelli: We've been patient with tuukka, be careful with young goalies. Goalies are better developed at slower pace, peak at 25-26. Tim isn't the player he was last year, but he's very competitive.

Chiarelli: NHL told Bruins "just play the game" 2010 isn't 1970, "can't advocate frontier justice" NHL "dropped the ball" hopes for a win

Chiarelli: "I hope this year's a blip," expected year to go better. Can only move forward. Hopes STHs give bruins a 2nd chance.

Yup RT @Dwatson783: PC- "not making excuses for the team's performance." he's disgusted with it as well

Chiarelli: Seidenberg improved since summer, Morris misread before signing. Wideman pressed this year, isn't last year's player, due to reasons he can and can't discuss. High expectations from fans. Does things on the powerplay other's can't.
I'm not sure what the reasons he can't discuss are, but I hope Wideman gets out of his funk.
Chiarelli: "coming jnto this call, I prepared all defensive responses." proud of tuukka, Patrice, team "trying to hold it together"

Chiarelli: seen a static neutral zone, regrouping, no confidence, "forecheck hasn't been totally successful" Have to adapt.

Chiarelli: there's a lot of things that happened this summer. Complacency.

Chiarelli: "I love his size. I love his try....I like Mark Stuart". Hopes he inherits leadership. Thanks fans, and we're done here.

And there's the re-posting of my twitter updates during this. I hope you enjoyed it.

Game 62: Bruins vs. Maple Leafs WELCOME TO DUNDERDOME

Welcome to Boston, Dennis!
Game 62
7:00 PM March 4, 2010
NESN, VS (in New York), 98.5 FM
vs. Toronto Maple Leafs (19-32-11)

There are a lot of people angry about Chiarelli not making enough moves, or making too many, or not going for the cup this year, or not blowing the team up completely.

Whatever, this is the team we've got. I'm not the GM and I doubt you are either (If you are, hello Peter! I hope you're enjoying this!) so we can rant and rave and whatever, but really there isn't much you can do about it except cry into your pillow at night.

This ain't the year.

Anyhow, let's look at the new kid:

Crushing a hab? Check.

Sniping from the blue-line? Check.

Really he should hopefully be at least as good as derrick morris, I'm hoping, maybe, please please I want to see a win before the year is out dammit.

Hey, could be worse. Could be Edmonton. Or Calgary. Or Toronto....who we're playing tonight.

News:
Tuukka is out day to day with lower body injury, Bergeron is sitting with a tweaked groin, Matthew "who?" Dalton will be backing up Thomas and Dany Sabourin is on re-entry waivers from Providence.

Welp.
If the Bruins don't win at home tonight, they'll have to wait until March 18th to try again.

Game 55 Preview: Bruins vs. Habs THE QUEST FOR ONE CONTINUES

Game 55
7 PM, February 4, 2010
NESN, 98.5 FM
vs. Habs (26-25-6)

The Montreal powerplay is humming along at a brisk %25.15, second only to Washington right now. And their PK is 8th with %83.48. The Bruins have the 2nd-best PK with 86.67, but our PP is still a dreadful 19th at %17.68. Basically, a man up OR a man down isn't ideal. Then again, neither is 5-on-5 really. Hmmm.

The Bruins haven't won at the Gahden since last year, they're on a losing streak not seen since the 50s, and generally things are pretty low. I don't think Ilya Kovalchuk's walking through that door, either. At least, not without trading Lucic or something.

Halak and Rask in net, in the battle of backups playing better than their anointed starters.

Mike Komisarek and Paul Martin are both out for the Olympics, so you no longer have to cheer for a villain. Tim Gleason and Ryan Whitney are taking their place. USA! USA! USA!

Welp, here's hoping they don't lose another one. Sigh...

Stats!
Haha, we have the same winning percentage. But 3 games in hand. Hmmm. Still pretty grim.

But wait, there's this little picture from the official Bruins twitter:

Game 51 Review: BRUINS 1 LAST PLACE HURRICANES 5 READY SET PANIC

Luckily instead of watching this mess of a game I got to watch some football...like watching the colts make it to another superbowl (dammit) and the Saints win but fail to cover the spread (worst case scenario). Woof.

Most of the people who watched the game mentioned things like "heart" "energy" "character" on Twitter, so I'll just say sure, that's probably it.

The Bruins now have the longest losing streak of the year. To find the last 5-game losing streak, you've gotta go back to December of 2007. Incidentally, the Bruins also dropped the 5th game of that streak to Carolina. They then lost the sixth game in a row to Atlanta. Luckily, there is not another game for a couple days. They have the opportunity to try to right the ship now before Friday. Oh wait, that's Buffalo? (Could be Savard's first game back) And then LA? ruh-roh.

At least the Olympics are soon.

L10: Game 41-50 (2-7-1) NEW STRATEGY: 2 LOTTERY PICKS

Yeah, we're not doing so hot right now. Let's jump right in because we all have days of watching sports ahead of us. First of all, the Bruins are currently out of the playoffs in terms of total points but if they can win the next three they'll be back to tied with Ottawa. By point percentage, they're in 7th in the east right now. I'm not entertaining dreams of catching Buffalo at this point, especially since we don't have games in hand on them and they're 13 points ahead. Jerks. Ryan Miller better bring his A+ game to Vancouver next month, is all I'm saying.

The losses we've had have been bad losses and as a result I know I've been much more interested in football and the Wild. Whatever, this is part of being a fan. Watching all your hopes and dreams slip away. Like that graph up there, which is the likelihood of the Bruins making the playoffs. Even if they do, I don't see them making it past the first round unless things really turn around. Then again who thought the Carolina Hurricanes would beat two of the best teams in the league last year and end up in the Conference Finals? Not I. Not I. Fuck those guys anyways.

17.18%

That's our powerplay. Not terrible, not great, 20th in the league. Not as good as it was last time around, not as bad as the start of the year. 1718 didn't have a whole lot going on, but Blackbeard the pirate was riding around, and that's pretty slick. Way to go, 1718!

87.71%

PK percentage. The Bruins are back on top of that stat, after dropping to second for a couple days this past week. Well, we're still good at SOMETHING....

126

Goals for AND goals against. The Bruins have scored the fewest goals in the whole league, and the only teams that have fewer goals against are Miller's Buffalo, Brodeur's Jersey, Luongo's Vancouver, and Keith/Seabrook's Chicago. Fortunately if they win today they'll tie or pass the next-lowest team in goals for (Carolina)

4

The number of players that have played in every game for Boston this year: Zdeno Chara, Blake Wheeler, Michael Ryder, and Mark Recchi. Three of these guys follow Patrice in most points for the Bruins. Ryder has 20 points, good for 9th.

42

Mark Recchi's age on February 1st. Mark Recchi is one of the better things going for the Bruins right now. In the last game when the top line was Paille-Bergeron-Recchi that was Claude saying to the rest of the players "These guys. These are the ones I want on the ice more than the rest of you shlubs." Recchi has said that this is his last year.

Fun fact: Mark Recchi is from Kamloops, where Blogger/Leafs beat writer James Mirtle is also from.

TORONTO PICK WATCH
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Cam Fowler, according to this mock draft.

Toronto? Still bad. Not as bad as Carolina and Edmonton, but still pretty damn bad. 3rd place in the lottery standings right now. Here's a fun little piece by Ryan Classic about Phil Kessel's performance this year. Fun part: Compared to Alexai Yashin. Look for Brian Burke to be yelling on your TV soon, folks!

Oh, and draft party at my house.

L10: Games 11-20 (3-4-3) THE SKY AIN'T REALLY FALLING WELL MAYBE IT IS

Harrumph. 3-4-3 is not a good record by any stretch of the imagination. I mean, it could be worse. With our superstar center Marc Savard out, the Bruins aren't doing so hot. Let's take a look at where we stack up...

.500
We've been at this record or so for pretty much the whole year. You don't make the playoffs at .500. You don't get a lottery pick either, unless Toronto comes through. In his season preview, Down Goes Brown mentioned that the Bruins lockerroom chemistry would suffer because they're not united by wanting to punch Phil Kessel in the face. They'll get a chance in a couple weeks, so maybe that will help. Oh, and Savard and Lucic coming back.

12.86%

This is the Bruins PP percentage. It is the worst in the league. In the year 1286, King Philip IV of France imposed the gabelle — a tax on salt in the form of a state monopoly — which would become immensely unpopular and grossly unequal, but persist until 1790. I'm still waiting for flying cars, here, people, and we're regressing. Please come back and save us all, Mr. Savard.

84.72%

This is the Bruins PK percentage, good for 3rd best behind San Jose and Chicago. Damn right, we've got the best PK in the east right now. The Bruins have been shutting down PKs and vomiting all over themselves on PPs. Google tells me that there was a "Species 8472" in one of the star treks after The Next Generation, so who cares really, but I went to all the effort of checking it out and now you're reading it so who's got the egg on their face now?

Thank you to the Minnesota Wild (dammit) and the Anaheim Ducks (haha, eat shit) for having more Short-handed goals against than the Bruins do.

-0.22

This is the Bruins Simple Rating System number for today. Higher is better, and yes it can go positive. This is good for 19th best, which is actually slightly better than their points percentage rankings. 22 is Shawn Thornton's jersey number. Not sure what the significance is of that, if anyone out there reading this (hi mom!) is a numerologist, please get in touch or leave a comment.

Toronto First round draft pick watch: 3-11-5 (29th in the league): TYLER SEGUIN!
Tyler is the #1 ranked OHL player right now, which is the league Taylor Hall plays in. Carolina looks to be Tanking for TH right now, though. Oh look, the two teams play each other tomorrow. Root for Aaron Ward, guys!

Things could be worse. Things could be worse. Things could be worse. Things could be worse. Things could be worse. Things could be worse. Things could be worse. Things could be worse. Things could be worse. Things could be worse. Things could be worse. Things could be worse.

L10: First ten games (5-4-1) A LITTLE BETTER ALL THE TIME (Can't get much worse!)

Well, hmmm.

RkTeamGPWLOLPTSPTS%GFGASRSTG/GPPGPPOPP%PPGAPPOAPK%SHGSHGA
17Boston Bruins1054111.5503032-0.426.2064015.00104175.6103

The Bruins have had an interesting start to their season. They started off losing, we lost Lucic and Savard to LTIR for a broken finger and broken foot. We traded Kobasew to Minnesota and picked up Daniel Paille from Buffalo, marking the first time Boston and Buffalo had ever made a trade that wasn't for ufa bargaining rights. On top of that, we're about 1/8th through the season and the Bruins have just put together their first consecutive, uh...point-getting games. Going by point percentage, the Bruins are 9th in the east. They have the 4th-worst powerplay in the league right now, converting 6 out of 40 chances or at a 15% clip.

That's terrible. So is letting in 10 powerplay goals over 41 chances, or a 75.61% success rate. This pretty much sucks too. Oh look, another fun fact: The Bruins tie the Tampa Bay Lightning for the league lead in short-handed goals against with three. Not too surprising, since the Bruins powerplay managed to get an icing call against it once recently. Basically that needs to get a lot better.

However, last years Bruins had a bit of rust too and I remember watching the PK and PP numbers continuously get better last year. Here's to that happening again, especially after Savard and Lucic come back. Last year around this time the Bruins were 30th in PK with 70%, and ended up 12th with 82.35%. Last year's powerplay was only bested by San Jose, Washington, and Detroit over the regular season.

Bergeron now has his chance to live up to his 5 million dollar contract. You can do it, Patrice!

How's our draft pick doing? (Toronto update)
Current Status: TAYLOR HALL
Toronto hasn't yet won a game, and only forced overtime once. They're 0-7-1, and have spent more time this season down by 5 than up by anything. Combined.

I think the next 10 games are going to be better than the last as people get more used to playing with the new folks. I think the Kobasew trade shook them up a bit. Lucic and Savard are still out, and that will make things...interesting. Let's hope the rookies play well. They've done okay so far. And the Revolution just made the playoffs! Awesome!

Game 8 Preview: Bruins vs. Nashville INSERT SEXUAL PREDATOR JOKE HERE

Game 8
7 PM ET October 21st

Well, if you haven't gone over a cliff or into a toaster-laden bathtub or done the hangman's jig by now then I guess it's about time for a hockey game. If you haven't heard, Savard is out 4-6 weeks with a broken foot. If you want to go break something, I'll wait. Try not to let it be another Bruin.

Anyhow now that you're back there is in fact a game on tonight. The preds kinda suck, but are looking for that breakout game that a shaken-up Bruins squad might give them. Then again, maybe the rookies will pull through. I have no idea.

Goddamn. Savard out 4-6 weeks with a broken foot. I suppose the ray of light in this is that Sturm is still healthy, but it's been a hell of a first couple weeks to the season.

I think we should just throw in the towel and get two lottery picks. (KIDDING I SWEAR)

GAME 1 RECAP: <3 Patrice <3

BONJOUR! Je m'appelle Patrice Bergeron! J'ai marqué un but!

Thanks, Alix!

Aside from Patrice Bergeron being the man, we now know that Derrick Morris doesn't like Ovechkin...probably because of this:

You can't see it, but the puck goes BETWEEN Morris's legs. He threw some good hits tonight, most against the Gr8 one. (excuse me, I need to vomit about that.)

Patrice Bergeron is also looking absolutely great. No really, fantastic. Oh look, here he is scoring the Bruins only goal, basically short-handed but .00001 seconds too late to be counted as such (lame):
(apologies to Evan for NHL video clip and sentence fragments :))

Oh game recap? Sure: Ovechkin, Ovechkin, Ovechkin, Ovechkin, Bergeron.

Dennis Wideman Oduya, Johnny
Jackman, Barrett Hunwick, Matt

Nabokov, Evgeni

Bruins have the 25th pick in a serpentine draft. I haven't been doing any trading. Here's the picks board. I'm open to suggestions.

Game 72 Recap: BRUINS 2 KINGS 3 OT LOSS WHAT THE HELL BRUINS

Are you kidding me? Are you fucking kidding me?

At least it wasn't an own goal, I guess.

The story of this game is the LAKings scoring late. The first period, the Bruins look like they're finding their legs in the early goings, then they seem to find them. They start playing like they mean it.

Ok, back on track. 15 minutes into the first, krejci gives it to ryder down low. Ryder puts that puck from behind the net through a guy or two onto hunwick's stick and hunwick blasts it home. This is after John Quick has managed to make a lot of good stops.
GOAL!
1-0. Hunwick gets the goal! Huzzah!

The rest of the first goes on but I don't remember anything particularly noteworthy.

EXCEPT

Right at the end of the first, the kings are working the front of the net as the final seconds count down. The green light flashes and the siren sounds, and then they put one in. It's like those fake goals you "score" in NHL 09. You know what I'm talking about. For me, it usually foreshadows real goals.

Then the second period starts, and within a couple minutes Recchi manages to get one home when Patrice gives him an absolute gift of a pass, completely faking out Quick.
GOAL!
2-0. One of their home-run passes finally does something. It's the last time, but they keep trying. Learn a new tactic, Kobasew.

Then Ivanans tries to start a fight or something and the Bruins aren't going for it, they like their 2-0 lead right where it is. Which is ok for the next 25 minutes of play.

But then the Kings are an aggressive, play 60 minutes because we want to make the playoffs team. Like the Islanders with more points and better talent. So then Michael Handzus.
2-1. 10:10. Uh oh.

Drew Doughty. 1:36
2-2. Shit.

Overtime time. The bruins for some awful reason are trying to get it to the shootout. I don't know why, it doesn't make any sense what the hell is going on with this team why are the L A KINGS more successful in February and March than the Bruins? Shit.

Oh yeah, Dustin Brown. 0:35.
2-3. Game.

Overtime Loss.

Shit. And I was all ready to stop shaving, too.

L10: Game 51-60 (4-4-2)

By far the worst one of these yet. The Bruins are in a slump, and 6 out of 10 games are losses. They got 10 points out of a possible 20 in the last ten, and in the NHL .500 is not a playoff pace. Of course for now they're just eating into the lead they built earlier in the season, but all those games are behind them. Luckily, the next 6 games are at home, so home cooking and hometown fans should provide a boost. It seems like something happened in that Sharks game that sorta turned the bruins off.
  • Game 51: Bruins win in Montreal, 3-1.  Shawn Thornton has a great game, scores a game-winning goal.  The Bruins hit hard enough to put a couple Montreal skaters out. Streak: W2
  • Game 52: Bruins win in Philadelphia, 3-1.  Every Bruins goal seemed to start with a slapshot from the blueline. Streak: W3
  • Game 53: Bruins win the shootout in Ottawa, 3-3.  P.J. is the only successful shooter in the skills competition and manages to get us a win against super nintendo. Streak: W4
  • Game 54: Bruins lose 4-3 in OT to the flyers.  The game-winner bounces in off of ferences leg.  Between the break and this, ference should get some new age something or other done (I assume he's into that, since he's a hippy and all that).  Streak: L1
  • Game 55: Bruins lose to sharks, 5-2.  This was a great game, and the score lies.  The sharks were up 3-2, then Big Dumbo Joe had a buck bounce off him and in, followed by an empty netter. Streak: L2
  • Game 56: Bruins Lose 1-0 to New Jersey, who are playing really well right now.  The one goal was a five-hole shot from the point off a faceoff.  Both goalies played out of their minds. Streak: L3
  • Game 57: Bruins lose in the shootout, 2-2 to the panthers. Streak: L4
  • Game 58: Bruins win a damn game, 5-1 against Carolina on Glen Wesley night.  Part of the  "revenge against moving the team south" campaign. Streak: W1.  Maybe things are looking up!
  • Game 59: Bruins lose 0-2 to the Florida Panthers.  Woof. Streak: L1.  Maybe they can split in florida?
  • Game 60: Bruins lose 3-4 to the Tampa Bay Lightning.  They looked better, but not good enough. Streak: L2.  The Sky, she falls.
Whoof.  Longest losing streak of the year, worst L10 record all year, etc.  Like I said, it's bad.  So here's CSA Astronaut (and MIT grad) Bob Thirsk in space on mission STS-78 in 1996, recreating, well, you know:

Game 60 Recap: BRUINS 3 "BOLTS" 4 POINTLESS FLORIDA ROAD TRIP

"Every team has circled us. We've got to circle them back."
- Doc Rivers, Celtics Coach. (Paraphrase)

Well, there goes another one. The Bruins are 4-4-2 in their last 10. They've dropped 6 of the last 7, haven't played at home in 2 weeks, and still have the league's best road record. This is a slump. Let's go through some goals, and then move on.

"Effort is good, points count."
- Zdeno Chara, paraphrase

- Claude Julien, Coach

The game starts off on a high note: Kessel getting his first goal since he got mono:

1-0. Kessel!

Then the Lightning take over for 15 seconds about 2 minutes later.
Halpern.
1-1.
Hall.
1-2.

The Bruins remember what a power play is, and Ference-Wideman-Savard-Ference-Net.

2-2. Hey, a powerplay goal! Woohoo!

Mark Recchi scores one halfway through the second period.
2-3. Ugh.

Then with 5 minutes left in the second, the Bruins rush out of their own zone. Kobasew-Chara-Net.

3-3. Nice going there, Chara.

The 3rd period is a whole lotta back and forth, and then Kessel-Ramo-Kessel-neRAMO.

3-3. Wow, what a save.

The Bruins spend 4 of the last 5 minutes on the PK, thanks to Tampa's crap boards giving all kinds of funny bounces, including one that involves Ference passing it to Wideman, but the puck decides it will crawl up the glass and out instead.
3-4. Prospal.

Loss.

Ughh.

Game 57 Recap: BRUINS 2 PREDATORS 2 SO LOSS DAMN YOU DAVID LEGWAND

Yup, that's now 4 in a row.  That's a year-long high.  In fact, the Bruins are the only team in the Northeast that hasn't won their last game.  The only other team in the Eastern conference top-8 that lost their last game is the Rangers, and they (Rangers) are 3-5-2 over their last 10.

The Bruins are 5-2-3 in their last 10.  It's not quite freefall, but it's close and I think that's the worst last 10 they've had all season.  This is the midseason slump that tests any team.  This is where the Bruins have the option to stand up and prove that they really are as good as they've been playing most of the season, or to show that they're frauds, this year's 07-08 Ottawa Senators.  The big names they're missing at this point are Ryder, Sturm, and Kobasew.  We really need them back.  Calling up Sobotka and Bitz has been good.  Personally, I'd like to see St. Pierre and more skill players come up so the Bruins can score more goals.  Throwing big bodies around can only go so far.

Speaking of Kobasew, hello to reader Kelly, who I met at an afterparty for a friend's band.

Anyhow, onto the game.  Due to the valentine's day thing and a couple of friends bands playing shows, I couldn't watch the whole game.  But here's what I gathered out of it.

In the first periods, the Bruins extended their scoreless streak to a full 6 periods, from after the first in the San Jose game through the whole devils game and the first period of the game against the predators.  Getting points from western conference teams is kinda important in the eastern conference race.  Looking at the top teams in the west, the Bruins are actually 3rd vs. the west, going 7-4-2.  The two teams doing better vs. the west are the Habs (8-3-1) and the Sabres (8-6-1), in terms of total points for.

Oh, and David Legwand scores a goal.
0-1.  Whatever.

Second Period, and the first ten minutes have a lot of nashville penalties, giving the Bruins the opportunity to go 0-for-4, bringing their total to...2-for-35?  I think that's actually how bad it's gotten.  Come back soon, everyone.

David "what the hell kind of name is" Legwand puts in a short-hander.
0-2.  Disgusting.

Luckily, Blake Wheeler knows that the best way to react to being scored on is to turn it around and answer with your own goal.  You have to watch some crap ad because you missed the game first.  Whatever.  David Krejci tries for a one-timer off Sobotka from between the hashmarks, but the blade of his shoddily-constructed stick just falls right off.  The Bruins pay over $400,000 a year for sticks because of things like this.  Blake wheeler picks up the rebound and backhands it over YoungStars teammate Pikka Rinne for the Bruins first goal in 138:31 of play.

1-2.  You now have an argument for that guy who said he still doesn't "believe in" Blake Wheeler, whatever that means.

The rest of the second doesn't show up in the highlights.

In the third, the Preds and Bs were back and forth or maybe they just danced around the neutral zone.  Looks like Boston took two penalties in the first half.

Then the Captain decided that dammit, if nobody else was going to work the front of the net, somebody had to.  Chara in front of your net = goal-time.  With less than 2 minutes to go, Chara ties it up.  He gets checked right afterwards, too.

2-2.  Still a chance.  Let them get a penalty in OT, and let's do this thing.

Hnidy gets a penalty one minute in.  Well, crap.

Shootout time.

Wheeler scores on the first attempt, then a couple of saves and misses later...
Yup, David Legwand scores both shootout goals for the Predators.

Shootout Loss.

Nice tie, guys, now get out there against Carolina on Tuesday and win something.  Dammit.  Don't be so scared of your 40th win.

Game 56 Recap: BRUINS 0 DEVILS 1 THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A GOOD LOSS

Well crap.  The Bruins have played close games against 2 of the other top teams in the league this past week, and ended up without the W in both.  Milan Lucic is the only Bruin that's scored since a week ago, and the Bruins have been shut out for the last 5 periods.  You want a recap?  fine.

The Bruins and Devils play really good hockey, and nobody is letting up a goal.

Off the faceoff, the Devils wrist one in from the point, and it bounces through Timmy's 5-hole.
0-1.

The Devils and Bruins play really good hockey, and Mike Milbury calls it boring afterwards because he is stuck in 1995.

Game.
Loss.

Sobotka almost kicked one in, and had a definite attraction to the Devil's right post.

Is this the Bruins coming back down to earth, or is it just 2 games in a row against top teams when we're down only a couple people?  I miss Ryder, Sturm, and Kobasew.  I also remember when there were like 5 guys hurt and the Bruins STILL won a bunch of games.  Heck, even San Jose has lost 3 games in a row now.

Game 46 Recap: BRUINS 4 BLUES 4 SO LOSS SOMETIMES YOUVE JUST GOTTA SAY WTF

Vomit.

First period, first 5 minutes. You notice that Wheeler's taken Axelsson's spot on the top line. Why mess with a good thing?

1-0. Oh, I suppose.

3 minutes later, Brad Winchester ties it up for St. Louis.
1-1. The Bruins are looking wicked flat, and I don't like it.

And all of a sudden, there are no Mannys in net. Legace probably hurt himself somehow.

Second Period, 7 minutes in, and the Bruins are down, thanks to Mr. McClement.
1-2. Thanks for nothing.

That about ends it for the second. Score entering the third: 1-2, St. Louis on top.

With less than 5 minutes to go in the 3rd, the score is the same. In your mind, you're going "c'mon, not to the blues. Not to the blues. not to the blues. You can do it, Bruins."

Luckily, the Blues decide to take two penalties in a row, and the Bruins have less than a minute of 5-on-3 to work with. Luckily, they've got Krejci, Ryder, Savard, Chara, and Wideman out there. If those 5 can't score 5-on-3, we're...

2-2. We can find out what a world without that would look like later, I suppose.

Bruins keep the Powerplay, and see the opportunity to turn it all around. They end up in their own zone, and then go rushing in. Wideman leads the charge, and bounces it off of Mason's chest. Ryder flies through the zone, trying to get it but misses. Luckily, P.J. is there.

3-2. Can we stop whining about Axelsson, now? It's not like he hasn't scored clutch goals. I think people are just reminded of how crappy the bruins used to be just by his presence. Or their scared of his hair. Either way, the Bruins are back on top and the world is wonderful again.

30 seconds after that, and there's a faceoff in the offensive zone (icing, I believe). Krejci steps up to the center dot. He gets it out just enough for Axelsson to get it back to Chara, who lets fly. It gets through 8 players, 3 beer lines, and one St. Louis Blues goalie. Nice screen job, everybody.

4-2. You're thinking, "3 minutes left, just gotta get the empty netter now).

But then SOMEBODY takes a penalty for the Bruins. David Perron decides to capitalize on it from the point. Dink dink
4-3. You're thinking, ok, 1:20 to go, let's just keep it in the offensive zone for the rest of the game, please?

You know how this story ends. Here it is in full youtube glory:

Toronto calls it a goal, but the replay we saw at the garden showed the stick never getting below the crossbar. Any time they want to set up special cameras for that, I'm for it.
4-4. 0.8 seconds to go.
You're wishing they still served beer, because you could use one right about now.

Overtime ends in a tie.

The Bruins are out of practice on the shootout. And lose.

Dammit.

L10: Games 31-40: 8-2-0

Well, the Bruins got all the way to 10 wins in a row only to drop the last 2 games. They haven't looked as good as before and they're definitely playing better teams than before. I have a feeling it might get worse before it gets better. Here's what happened in the last 10 games:
  • Game 31: Bruins 8, TOR 5: David Krejci gets his first NHL Hat Trick, Wideman cracks glass, Toskala is pulled and then replaced. Each Toronto goalie gives up 4 goals. Kessel Streak: 16 games.
  • Game 32: Bruins 4 CAR 2: Bruins look like crap the whole night, still double-up on the Canes thanks to an empty netter. Patrice Bergeron gets another concussion, this time while hitting a guy. Terrible. Kessel Streak: 17 games
  • Game 33: Bruins 6 STL 3: It's a battle of the Mannys, but Wheeler steals the show in the first 5 minutes, scoring a short-handed goal for a possible goal of the year. In the first period, 2 penalties each have a SHG and a PPG. Martin St. Pierre gets an assist in his first game with the Bs. Kessel Streak: 18 games.
  • Game 34: Bruins 2 NJD 0: Kessel's streak ends but Thomas makes a BEAUTIFUL save on Elias to get a shutout and Lucic scores in his 8th game. Krejci pots the empty netter. This is the first time the Bruins have won more than 5 in a row all season.
  • Game 35: Bruins 3 CAR 2: Blake Wheeler scored 2 goals in less than 5 minuts for the millionth time. A Savard pass leads to the game-winner.
  • Game 36: Bruins 2 ATL 1: The Bruins finish a season sweep of the Thrashers. This time it's krejci passing to Ryder that causes the game-winner.
  • Game 37: Bruins 5 PIT 2: The highlight of this game is a 4-on-3 Bruins powerplay with Savard and Krecji up front. They get into the offensive zone, and prove the Greater Crisp Passing Theory of hockey.
  • Game 38: Bruins 4 PIT 2: 10 in a row. The Bruins continue to beat the slumping pens, scoring an empty netter to finish this one off. Vladimir Sobotka stands up Jordan Staal at the blue line.
  • Game 39: Bruins 2 BUF 4: The winning streak ends. The Buffalo defense was fantastic, the Bruins couldn't get anything going, except a Shawn Thornton goal.
  • Game 40: Bruins 0 MIN 1: Minnesota grinds out a 1-0 win on the strength of a Marek Zidlicky power play slap shot. The Wild are undefeated in Boston over 5 games here. Dammit.
5 Questions with the enemy Review:
Bonus question: Is your job the best ever?
Since leering at Scarlett Johansson while she sleeps can’t really be considered a profession, yes.
Game 40: Wild Road Tripper from Hitting the Post
3) You travel to many Wild away games, and have home season tickets. Is that awesome or totally awesome?
WRT: With the number of Wild games I see in person (50 this season alone) I have somewhat of a feeling of how players and the rest of the teams' travelling party feels like. For them, it's a real grind. Thank God, they get to fly charter. The rest of us are stuck with commercial flights, a lot of which are late and/or cancelled. Say what you will, but the NHL really needs to rethink how it schedules games. To ask anyone to play hockey in Southern California (or Florida) one night and in sub-zero Minnesota (or, Ottawa) 48 hours later is asking a lot. It's good and it's bad for me (and my wife) as our schedule is set so far in advance we normally get cheap air fares (cheaper after Southwest begins serving Minneapolis-St. Paul, March 6) but then we have very little flexibility to change our minds after we commit to a game. I know the B's don't have that much of a problem with it, but out here we are really screwed.
Game 40: Greg Nation, friend of the Blog.
Which Boston-area mascot is the best?
I hate mascots. In fact, everyone above the age of 5 does. They're stupid, cartoonish creations that detract from the seriousness of the sport. But, if I had to pick a favorite, it would be the Boston Massacre Roller Derby's mascot, which appears to be a drunk guy in a lobster suit with a rifle.
Watch your back, Minnesota.
Best Goal:
Blake Wheeler, 4:59 into Game 33 vs. St. Louis. This is shorthanded, mind:

Best Save:
Tim Thomas, second period of Game 34 in New Jersey. Elias has a wide open net and Thomas is sprawled out from a save on Parise. SAVE. So huge.

Best Hit:
Vladimir Sobotka on Jordan Staal. Sobotka is tiny, Staal is huge.
