Matt Kalman: Have you no sense of decency, sir?

So I'm reading through my RSS feed reader and an item of interest popped up: "Column: Horton has to show more, and Florida would be a place to start." Yeah, you're not reading it wrong. It's really a slag on Mr. New Bruin, Mr. Fought Dion Phaneuf, Mr. point-per-game until Monday when everyone sucked. So, Matt, what have you got for us about this season's possible 7th man award winner?

Appearance-wise, the Florida fans (however many of them bother to show up Wednesday night in Sunrise, Fla.) probably won’t recognize Nathan Horton.
Well, they actually might, since he's only been gone a couple months. He was one of their stars for the last 5 years. I'm sure Ottawa fans don't remember Zdeno Chara and Phil Kessel plays in Boston with barely a whisper mentioned about him, right?
Unless something changes overnight, he’ll probably be sporting the same grin he has been wearing ever since he first joined the Bruins and escaped what he obviously deemed to be an ill-fitting situation with the Panthers last June.
Likely, yes, but the only reason Florida fans won't recognize that is that when Nathan Horton smiles, he turns people to stone. So there will be some statues in and around the Sunrise arena that recognize the grin but the rest are luckily far enough away or conveniently dressed like tarps.
However, there are evidently two Nathan Hortons when it comes to on-ice performance, and if the wrong one takes the ice for the Bruins it could bring back all-too-familiar memories for the small but loyal Florida fan base.
Finally, Matthew gets to the meat of his argument: Nathan Horton has played 19 games for the Bruins and has failed to win the Stanley Cup in each of those 19 games. Nevermind the fact that he's clicking on the top line or leading the Bruins in points and up until Monday night's snoozefest (literally, I was asleep) he was a point-per-game player. Let's see what he has to say here:
Horton’s numbers have been excellent through 19 games, as he has recorded 18 points, including eight goals. He leads the team in scoring and is on pace to top the 30-goal mark, which was what the Bruins optimistically set for his potential production when the season started. En route to that solid amount of production, Horton has enjoyed nights of physical forechecking and work along the boards, in addition to diligent backchecking. That’s the Nathan Horton the Bruins bragged about after they picked him up.
Wait, isn't that exactly what I just said? So what's the problem here, Matt? Did he refuse you an interview or not bite on some bait? What's the deal?
But then there are nights when the other Nathan Horton shows up — nights like Monday in Tampa, where Horton failed to record a point or even a shot on net. It was the third time Horton failed to shoot on goal this season, but this time his lack of an attempt led to his extending his season-worst goal-less stretch to four games.
Even when Gretzky set the scoring record for what will probably be all time, he still had a couple nights without a point. That's right. En route to 215 points, a record that will stand for a long long time, he had a couple of off nights. Now, I'm not saying that Horton is Gretzky - far from it. I am saying that Horton wasn't brought in to not only be point-per-game but also put the Bruins on his back every night and drag them to victory. Let's see how much further down the rabbit hole Kalman falls:
In the aftermath of Horton’s two prior shot-less outings, he bounced back well. He scored a goal at home against Washington Oct. 21 and did the same on the Capitals’ home ice Nov. 5. He was still a bit gun-shy in those two contests with just two shots on net in both, but at least he cashed in on his chances. We’ll find out Wednesday night how Horton responds to maybe his worst game as a member of the Bruins against the Lightning.
Horton played his 19th-best game as a Bruin Monday night. He went 0-0-0 and was a -1. He's been a minus in three games this season, including that November 5th game mentioned above when he was a -2. The other was his debut game as a Bruin where he had 2 goals and Rask had a spot of bad luck starting out. So yeah, his -1 rating in a 3-1 loss might be his worst game. Ask Thomas Kopecky about bad games (-5 in 17:12 of ice time) this year, maybe. 0-0-0 and a -1? Well, that could be a lot worse.
Not only didn’t Horton manage a shot on goal, he seemed disinterested. In fact, he looked like the player the Panthers carried the last couple of years who earned a reputation for passion-less hockey. Horton’s last seven games, actually, have left little to be desired. He has scored just once in that stretch and averaged just 1.57 shots per game. Shots on net don’t have to be an end-all indicator of solid play — and Horton did assist on all three Milan Lucic goals last week against the Panthers — but there has been little else to Horton’s play over the same stretch.
I heard he told the caterer he wouldn't feed the roast beef to his dog, either. Excuse me, I've got to go find my eyeballs - they seem to have rolled out of my head. Be back in a minute. Here, while I'm out, watch this video of Horton playing "passion-less hockey":
Oh, thank goodness! I found them! Under the fridge. Gotta get the dust off and we're back in time to savor what Andy Brickley just said about Horton while we read on in Kalman's atrocity:
Prior to this string of games, he averaged 2.5 shots per game in the 12 contests that featured his first seven goals. When you figure he averaged 2.45 shots per game on the way to 20 goals last season and 2.65 shots in 2006-07 (a 31-goal year), it’s obvious he’s only at his best when he’s putting that lethal wrister to use more often.
And in 08-09 he averaged 1.96 and scored 22. Yes, he obviously scores more when he shoots more but it's not a bad thing to have a high shooting percentage. Average around the league (by team) should be around 10...Horton's lowest percentages were 12.6 last year and 12.7 the year before when he scored 27.
Horton has to now prove that he can take the necessary steps to prevent an extended stretch of lifeless play from turning into an all-out slump. When he’s not scoring, he has to be creating chances, has to be making things happen with his body. That’s what he said he was ready to do on a consistent basis right after the trade and all through training camp. Now it’s time to show it. The Bruins don’t need another high-priced passenger in their lineup.
Passenger. Yup. That's what Kalman just said. He called Horton a "Passenger." Or called it into question, at least. Say what you will about Nathan Horton (unless you feel like writing up some dumb character assassination crap like Matthew has done here). Mr. Kalman, I believe you have locker room access. Can you do something for me? Can you go in there and ask Milan Lucic (or anyone else) if they think Nathan Horton's been a "passenger" to the Bruins?

While we're at it, who are the high-priced passengers in the lineup right now? You did say "another" so let's figure out who it is. Highest priced forward is Patrice Bergeron, and I don't think he's exactly having a bad year. He slotted in just fine up top with Krejci out, which actually helped Wheeler prove he's a better player than we thought. Next up for forwards is Milan Lucic (ha!), then Marc Savard (arguably, yes, but ask again when he's on the ice), Michael Ryder (having a hell of a contract year), then Horton and Krejci. Nope, no passengers there. Everyone else is Seguin (rookie doing work), Marco Sturm (See also Marc Savard), and a bunch of forwards making under 3 million. None of the forwards are "high-priced passengers."

On Defense, there are two guys making over 3 million: Norris-trophy winner and Captain Zdeno Chara (4-5-9 +10 - not a passenger) and Dennis "Dikembe" Seidenberg (7 assists, +5, 4th in the league in Blocked Shots - not a passenger). Nope. Okay, so it's gotta be a goalie, right? Sure! Tim Thomas is earning his cash money and Rask is being paid like a backup and soaking up losses (including one where he played a 3-1 period and got the loss). So, nope, not seeing any passengers here right now.
There’d be no better place to do that than in the BankAtlantic Center. The day after Horton and the Bruins downed those Panthers in Boston last week, he contemplated what playing in front of the Florida crowd might be like when asked about the possibilities.
Ah yes, the pre-written storyline. Player returns to team that drafted him and had him for a while. Gaborik back to Minnesota, Kesselmania, and now Horton to Florida. I bet he says something like "I appreciate the fans, and I have great memories, and I want to come home with the win" or something like that.
"I don’t know what it’s going to be like. It’s different. Obviously, it’s nice when you get the win against them. But it’s definitely going to be a little bit weird being down there,” said Horton.
Horton spitting mad fire. Throwing big heat against Flori-what? Oh, okay. Maybe he didn't. Whatever, he pulled from a different quotebook.
It’ll be a lot weirder if Horton goes out and plays the spirited hockey he started the season with. The folks in Sunrise probably don’t remember what that looks like. And the Bruins don’t want that Nathan Horton to become a distant memory.
It actually would be pretty weird if he came out and scored like crazy. In each of the afore-mentioned returns, the returning scorer put down a paltry 0-0-0 in front of his former hometown crowd. Of course, Gretzky broke a scoring record in Edmonton but I don't think it was his first game back.

As for that last part, Matthew? I think Mr. Joseph N. Welch, head of the council for the Army during the McCarthy hearings said it best:

"You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"

Well, Matthew? Do you?

Unsung Heroic Moments: Andrew Ference breaks his leg killing a penalty - November 13, 2008

Well there hasn't been a whole lot of news and I couldn't make it to prospect camp (go go Seg Knight line!) and I saw on Twitter that Andrew Ference went to visit the BP oil spill the other day. The same day they got that second, functioning cap on it.

Now, I'm not saying that Andy actually fixed the problem. But I am saying the guy probably had a little to do with it. He did start a Carbon Neutral Challenge program for NHL players to buy carbon offset credits. He and Chara both support Right to Play, and Andy even donated a motorcycle to them for a charity auction. But enough about his charitable works. I want to talk about a fateful November night back in 2008. The Bruins beat the Habs at home, 6-1, but there was some bad news as well. Here's what I wrote about it back then:
The worst part of this whole period was Andrew Ference going down in the Bs defensive zone. He stayed down for a while, and then when the ref refused to call the injury stoppage, he had to get up and limp around until they could get it out. It probably aggravated his injury, too. Still, he still played some solid defense on one leg.
Gnarly, right? Yeah, I think we can all agree that sounds like it sucked. He was out until January 27th. Interesting point about that night: Going into the game, he lead the team with a +9 rating. He played the 4th-most minutes out of all Bruins and didn't play the third period. He was doing really really really well and then Andrei Markov slaps one from the point and snaps his tibia. Terrible news. I want to highlight one bit here, though:
Still, he still played some solid defense on one leg.
Yup, that's what I wrote a year and a half ago, and I stand by it now. Andrew Ference is an awesome dude. As for that night? There were a couple other highlights, like Stephane Yelle and Shawn Thornton each assisting on each other's goals, Carey Price posting a .806 save percentage, and Lucic absolutely destroying Mike Komisarek. Here's the video:
Ference's moment is at 3:29 or so, but the whole game is excellent.

Enjoy your summers....sigh....

DRAFT LOTTERY TONIGHT! WOOOOOO

Well, ladies and gents, this is it. This is the part of the season you've been waiting for that isn't the playoffs. It's time for a

DRAFT LOTTERY PARTY!!!!

So the Bruins have an 18.8% chance of getting first overall and having to pick between Taylor Hall:

And Tyler Seguin:

Lordy lordy, what would we DO????

But if we don't get that 18.8% there's a 42% chance that we get the second overall pick. The Bruins would pick one of those gents but we wouldn't need to hear about how they should have picked the other one. Yeah, you know that would be coming.

Of course there's a third option, for third overall, and that's a 39.2% chance. That would be rough. We want that top-2 pick and that top-2 talent.

Good luck to us.

Game 73 Review: BRUINS 3 BOLTS 5 BOY THAT STAMKOS KID SURE IS GOOD

This picture is hilarious, click on it and take a close look at Recchi's face.

So the Lightning are a good young team, and even though they're probably not making the playoffs this year (then again that the Bruins are in the conversation is kind of ridiculous). That Stamkos kid sure does have a killer shot. Here's the goal-scoring race:Ovechkin, sure. Crosby, yup he's been scoring more. Stamkos? Hot damn. Kid can score. Especially last night, where the home-town fans were treated to a spectacular finnish goaltending performance. Of course it was in the wrong net, as Nittymaki stopped nearly all of the 50 shots on net. I guess it's better than no shots on net, but nobody ever said those shots were any good. The two goals were made out of getting someone next to the net and hoping for the best.

Really, though, Stamkos is way exciting and I like watching him play. At least, that's what I'm choosing out of this awful game.
Final: 3-5 bad guys.

Today's STH press conference recap

So I sat in on the Chiarelli conference call today with season ticket holders, and live-tweeted it. I'm collecting what I said there here, because it's easier to find later I figured not everyone who reads this follows me on twitter. I'm at HBAdventure, by the way. Here it is:

Chiarelli uses "identity" to mean "winning," p.s.

Chiarelli: Teemu Selanne was asked about, but wasn't available. Stempniak, etc, would have been "marginal" impact.

Chiarelli: Mcquaid, Caron, maybe Hamill, Colburne, TOR draft pick could all be full-time Bruins next year, but need vets to push them to be competitive.

Chiarelli: draft position will define offseason moves. if hall/seguin come to Boston, will be looked to to be high-scoring rookies. If not, free agency or trade.
The free agent market sucks this year, so let's not overpay.
Chiarelli: "I promise you that [last year's identity] will be back" "I challenged them to get it back this year" breaking: might make moves

Chiarelli: defensemen haven't been scoring nearly as much, knows bruins need to score, will "do something from a personnel perspective"

Chiarelli: kobasew is a high-character kid, but injury-prone. Bruins needed help on pk. "Chara growing everyday" Good question wickedbruinsfan

Chiarelli: players weren't ready mentally to live up to expectations at home. Bruins have 2 sports psychologists. Have done home-game hotel stays a couple times.

Chiarelli: We've been patient with tuukka, be careful with young goalies. Goalies are better developed at slower pace, peak at 25-26. Tim isn't the player he was last year, but he's very competitive.

Chiarelli: NHL told Bruins "just play the game" 2010 isn't 1970, "can't advocate frontier justice" NHL "dropped the ball" hopes for a win

Chiarelli: "I hope this year's a blip," expected year to go better. Can only move forward. Hopes STHs give bruins a 2nd chance.

Yup RT @Dwatson783: PC- "not making excuses for the team's performance." he's disgusted with it as well

Chiarelli: Seidenberg improved since summer, Morris misread before signing. Wideman pressed this year, isn't last year's player, due to reasons he can and can't discuss. High expectations from fans. Does things on the powerplay other's can't.
I'm not sure what the reasons he can't discuss are, but I hope Wideman gets out of his funk.
Chiarelli: "coming jnto this call, I prepared all defensive responses." proud of tuukka, Patrice, team "trying to hold it together"

Chiarelli: seen a static neutral zone, regrouping, no confidence, "forecheck hasn't been totally successful" Have to adapt.

Chiarelli: there's a lot of things that happened this summer. Complacency.

Chiarelli: "I love his size. I love his try....I like Mark Stuart". Hopes he inherits leadership. Thanks fans, and we're done here.

And there's the re-posting of my twitter updates during this. I hope you enjoyed it.

GLORY GLORY HALLALUJAH

Look, I know that things are looking very down and apparently we need to blow up the team or something and trade everyone or else the bruins will never win another game.

Just look at Pierre LeBrun's article over on that pinnacle of hockey coverage, ESPN.

"But I can tell you one thing, I'm not trading Toronto's pick [for this year]," said Chiarelli. "I am not trading it. That pick is too valuable."

You have no idea how glad that makes me. Now lets attack a troubling line from the article:

"The Bruins, who...currently sit one point out of a playoff spot" Bullshit. Stop right there, Pierre. As it turns out, every team plays 82 games. Once you've got that little tidbit in your brain let's look at the Games Played stat.

Three teams ahead of Boston have the same amount of games played as Boston: Buffalo, New Jersey, and Philadelphia. Buffalo and New Jersey are so far ahead right now they'd have to suffer dramatically for us to catch up. Philadelphia is one of the teams between 6 and 12 that is at either 55 or 54 points right now.

Two teams have one more game played than Boston: Washington and Atlanta. Washington is in the same category as Buffalo and NJ, and Atlanta has the same point total.

Three teams have 2 more games played than Boston: both New York teams and Florida. They're all in that 55 or 54 bubble as well.

Four teams have 3 more games played than Boston: Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Pittsburgh. Peter already told us about Toronto's season, Montreal is bubbling along, and Ottawa and Pittsburgh are at 62 and 67 points right now.

Going by the absolute standings the Bruins are in 12th right now. However, if you go by points percentage, the Bruins are in 7th. Let me repeat that:

The Bruins are in 7th in the East.

7th ain't so bad. 7th is, in fact, a playoff spot. And that's what we've achieved with a crippled team that's been in a slump and lost the last 5 games. What I'm saying is the Bruins aren't screwed yet. But that bubble's going to burst eventually and I hope we don't sell the future now for some crap rental.

Hope Springs Eternal.

L10: Game 41-50 (2-7-1) NEW STRATEGY: 2 LOTTERY PICKS

Yeah, we're not doing so hot right now. Let's jump right in because we all have days of watching sports ahead of us. First of all, the Bruins are currently out of the playoffs in terms of total points but if they can win the next three they'll be back to tied with Ottawa. By point percentage, they're in 7th in the east right now. I'm not entertaining dreams of catching Buffalo at this point, especially since we don't have games in hand on them and they're 13 points ahead. Jerks. Ryan Miller better bring his A+ game to Vancouver next month, is all I'm saying.

The losses we've had have been bad losses and as a result I know I've been much more interested in football and the Wild. Whatever, this is part of being a fan. Watching all your hopes and dreams slip away. Like that graph up there, which is the likelihood of the Bruins making the playoffs. Even if they do, I don't see them making it past the first round unless things really turn around. Then again who thought the Carolina Hurricanes would beat two of the best teams in the league last year and end up in the Conference Finals? Not I. Not I. Fuck those guys anyways.

17.18%

That's our powerplay. Not terrible, not great, 20th in the league. Not as good as it was last time around, not as bad as the start of the year. 1718 didn't have a whole lot going on, but Blackbeard the pirate was riding around, and that's pretty slick. Way to go, 1718!

87.71%

PK percentage. The Bruins are back on top of that stat, after dropping to second for a couple days this past week. Well, we're still good at SOMETHING....

126

Goals for AND goals against. The Bruins have scored the fewest goals in the whole league, and the only teams that have fewer goals against are Miller's Buffalo, Brodeur's Jersey, Luongo's Vancouver, and Keith/Seabrook's Chicago. Fortunately if they win today they'll tie or pass the next-lowest team in goals for (Carolina)

4

The number of players that have played in every game for Boston this year: Zdeno Chara, Blake Wheeler, Michael Ryder, and Mark Recchi. Three of these guys follow Patrice in most points for the Bruins. Ryder has 20 points, good for 9th.

42

Mark Recchi's age on February 1st. Mark Recchi is one of the better things going for the Bruins right now. In the last game when the top line was Paille-Bergeron-Recchi that was Claude saying to the rest of the players "These guys. These are the ones I want on the ice more than the rest of you shlubs." Recchi has said that this is his last year.

Fun fact: Mark Recchi is from Kamloops, where Blogger/Leafs beat writer James Mirtle is also from.

TORONTO PICK WATCH

Cam Fowler, according to this mock draft.

Toronto? Still bad. Not as bad as Carolina and Edmonton, but still pretty damn bad. 3rd place in the lottery standings right now. Couple of game recaps; Numbas

and Savard makes three...

Well, the Saturday game kinda sucked from a caring-about-the-bruins-winning perspective. However, Savard got a good goal and had a couple breakaways that he turned into drop-passes.

5-2, Arniel was the other Boston scorer. Whatever. The Bruins vets looked good, Thomas needs to shake off some rest, and Chara is an important part of our defense. Other than that, not much was going on.

The Bruins also beat the Habs in Quebec City in front of 40 of Patrice Bergeron's closest friends on Sunday (and they didn't even have to wear those puke-green shirts!).

And then Chemmy over on PensionPlanPuppets pointed out to me that Phil Kessel scored 13% of the Bruins' goals last year, and hahaha how did I feel about that, chump?

So here's my response:

Kessel was the highest-goal-scorer for the Bruins, yes. However, the second through twelfth player in goals scored are still there. Sorting the table by points, he’s the only one in the top ten missing.

We’ve lost 0 Short-handed goals, and 8 powerplay goals. Ryder, Savard, Wideman, and Chara all had more powerplay goals than Kessel.

Leaving him with 28 ESG last year. 6 other bruins had more than half that: Wheeler, Kobasew, Krejci, Lucic, Savard, Ryder. All of them are staying. Of course, none of them have over 10 percent of the Bruins even-strength scoring.

However, I think Ryder-Savard will be a good matchup, and if Sturm can stay healthy (every finger and toe on my body is crossed on this one) then we won’t be missing out too much.
Plus we’ll have Tuukka to push Thomas to be as good a goalie as possible, that will help on the other end of things. I think that puts the Bruins in contention for another Jennings trophy, which was a huge help last year.

Even without 36 goals, the Bruins would be 238-196, or up 42 goals over the season. The only teams with 42 more goals for than goals against last year were Detroit, San Jose, and Chicago. 42 is still good enough for best GF-GA in the whole Eastern Conference.

One more thing to look at: Assuming Kessel (whose production drops 40% when he's not with Savard) scores 36 goals again this year, that leaves Toronto with a -7 goal differential, still nearly 50 less than the Bruins'.

Eat it, Toronto.

Focus on the Positive: WE BEAT THE HAMTREAL BULLDIENS!!!

Over the offseason I'm going to try my hand at writing real things rather than just my usual bullet points and pictures attempts. The series I'm starting out with is "Focus on the Positive," where I talk about all of the good things that happened this season. There will of course have to be some negativity coming on, but for now the salary cap doesn't exist. DOESN'T EXIST!!!

So here's the first positive:

WE BEAT THE HABS IN THE PLAYOFFS!

Granted (blah blah blah, if the guys over at FHF want to fill this in they are welcome to do so, shoot me an email)

But the Bruins beat their hated rival. In four games. Sweep city. I tell you what - even if it was a team of grandpas or little kids like in that south park episode, I'd still like it.

We got to pick on Carey, we got to watch so many goals scored on a mediocre defense, we got to see Patrice fucking Bergeron win a fight. Truly, it was the best of times.

Here are the NHLVideo-provided youtube highlights of the 4 games:

Game 1:

Game 2:

Game 3:

Game 4:

Truly, a dominant performance against the team we'd all most like to come in last every year and somehow trade their number one pick away for prospects that then all decide to play in Russia.

So there's that, at least. Stay positive, folks.
