WE'RE NUMBER 1 WE'RE NUMBER 1

Steve Lepore over at Puck the Media released his list of the best blogs, team-by-team, and this little blog right here is representing the Bruins blogs. HOORAY! I'm in such good company as the pensblog, hockey independent, St. Louis Game Time, and Pension Plan Puppets.

Thanks to Steve for the nod, and I almost want to take back all the terrible things I've said about him behind his ba-

uh...thanks to Steve for his extremely interesting interview with my favorite bruins play-by-play announcer, Jack Edwards! Yes! Nice recovery, go with it.

Game 18 Preview: Bruins vs. Panthers #GETJACKEDWARDSONTWITTER

Game 18
November 12, 2009
7:00 PM
vs. Florida Panthers (5-9-1)

The key to the game is to get Jack Edwards on Twitter. F'real. If you're going and haven't left yet, head over to hubhockey and pick up some sweeeeeeet posters for the game. Or for future games. It's a movement, people.

Also of note: As yesterday was remembrance day for most of our team and veteran's day for Hunwick, Thomas, Stuart, and Wheeler.

P.K. Axelsson just had a baby and has put up at least 3 assists in his two games since.

Lucic was skating this morning, he's planning on being back for the game against Atlanta next week.

This tweet is vibrating.

Jack Edwards is a Poet, Lazy Links, the search for content, Weekend Liveblogs

It's that time of year again.  There's a 5-day break between NHL games and people just don't know what to do with themselves.  Bloggers looking for content are coming up with all kinds of stuff.

Jack Edwards does some slam poetry about the grind of the NHL schedule.

Of course, there's the usual Picks contests, and stuff about the festivities, and retrospectives.  But I prefer to focus on those bloggers that go above and beyond (or aren't lucky enough to have a press pass) and write some random stuff.  Let's take a look:
And this blogger?  Well, I'm pretty much just kicking back and figuring out how much ice skating I can squeeze in.  I'll probably tune in for the LiveBlog festivities over at Puck The Media tomorrow.  If Steve doesn't boot me out for whining about how Krejci should be in it somewhere.  If he does, I can always fall back on my friends at Melt Your Face Off who will also be holding a liveblog.

Spelling is hard:

Enjoy the break, folks!  (Unless you're one of the players playing, in which case please email me - I'd love to interview you.)

Game 35 Recap: BRUINS 3 CANES 2 CAN WE CALL 2 GOALS IN 5 MINUTES THE "WHEELER TRICK"?

I missed a lot of this game due to a number of reasons. But here's the highlights:

First Period: Canes score 1. Bruins score 0. Jack Edwards knocks it out of the park:

End of your career, Jack? I'm not so sure.

Second period
Blake Wheeler nearly falls over swiping at the puck in the slot. GOAL.

1-1. You're happy that the Bruins scored, they aren't looking so good.

~Less than 5 minutes later~

Blake Wheeler hits the puck from the corner up to Wideman, who slaps it in. Conn Smythe Trophy-winning Cam Ward makes the save, but the rebound ends up in the opposite direction to where he's lying on the ground. Blake Wheeler makes an understated tap to get it in the GOAL.

2-1. Yeah, we're going to have to start calling that a Wheeler-Trick.

Babchuck rains on everyone's parade.
2-2.

Third period.
Axelsson is framed for a high-sticking, then gets out of the box and gets right back in with another penalty. C'mon, Per-Johan, you're better than that.

7 minutes to go, Savard passes through the whole Carolina bench to Ryder, who one-times it over Cam Ward's shoulder into the GOAL.

3-2. You're wondering if you're going to watch overtime.

1:08 to go. Cam Ward goes to the bench.
Dennis Wideman knocks down a high dump into the Bruins zone, gives it to Savard. Savard sees the open net and passes to Kobasew, who gets it in.
4-2. You're happy Kobasew scored, and that Jack Edwards is making fun of the Carolina fans leaving with 15 seconds left.

GAME.

WIN!

The Instigators, etc.

I'll be out of town for this, but just watch the non-hockey-player try to look tough in this ad for "The Instigators" on NESN.

There's also a clip in there of "Two for Instigating," where Jack and Andy talk about a few things, including the All-Joke game. Embedding from NESN is less than perfect, so go find it through that link up top unless I manage to coax it into working.

Looks like it could be promising. I know our friends at Puck the Media will love to hear about this. Mike Milbury and Jack Edwards, together on a talking-heads sports show? Makes me chuckle.

Oh, and Jack Edwards is holding a Live Chat today at Noon. Solid.

In other news, the Debacle in Dallas is chugging along nicely. Up so far:

  • Marty Turco is playing for a starting job in the ECHL
  • Brendan Morrow had a TON of penalties before getting injured and will be out for the season
  • Steve Ott is out with a Broken Hand
  • Oh, and this little-known player named Sean Avery is suspended by the league for, well, this:

Classy Guy.

  • Sturm will be a game day decision for Thursday's game.
  • Chara will likely play with one of the call-ups in thursday's game, preserving the 2nd and 3rd D-line. Hopefully this means that Ward will be back soon.
  • I've added Double A Hockey to the sidebar to your left. It's a just-started bruins hockey blog. Welcome to the blogging party, y'all!

VOTE JACK EDWARDS

Ok, folks, I've been waiting for this day for a while.  Jack "Save by Thomas" Edwards...

Wait, hold on.   That's Jack "SAVE! BY! THOMAS!" Edwards is an eighth seed in Puck the Media's NHL Tournament of Announcers.  Voting starts RIGHT NOW. and lasts only 24 hours.  So if you're reading this at 5:30 pm on tuesday or later, it may already be too late.

Chris Cuthbert eats babies.  VOTE FOR EDWARDS!  Let's stuff the crap out of that ballot box.

Love him or hate him, Edwards is always an exciting guy to hear.  Here is proof, from the Dallas Game:

(dafoomie, you make my blog like 10 times better)

There's a reason that NESN has a "Jack Edwards quote of the Week." So GO VOTE!

Morning Thoughts

IT HAS BEGUN!

Fill in your own third winger. Results are at http://fanballoting.nhl.com/leaders. Right now, Thomas is in SECOND. I'm proud of you guys.

Vote Early, Vote Often.

Next order of business:
They like me, they really like me!
Sick.

If you didn't see the Red Wings-Penguins game last night, you fail. Or VS. does. Either way, find yourself some highlights or the full game. Or read the recap over at thePensBlog. Just a great game.

GameDay post will be up at 4pm as usual.
I'm worried about this week. Hawks, Habs, Rags are all off to a great start. But none are unbeatable.
Here's Kynch's Korner with a look ahead at the Bruins Original Six Week.
We've gotta take it one step at a time. So tonight we're in Boston (well, the team is). They got there in style:
(bruins.nhl.com - really)

STOP THE PRESSES
(but not the server, we need that.)
I just found the NESN.com blogs. Jack "SAVE BY THOMAS" Edwards has one.
Here he is talking about Brave Steve.

So does someone named Eric Ortiz. He may be the most whole-heartedly pro-bruins person ever. First he says that Obama winning the election means the Bruins could win the cup.
Then he gives us a Belichick-Julien comparison.
Eric Ortiz defines Homer.

And lastly, condolences to the whole Thornton family. Losing a family member isn't easy. But I'm sure they don't want it all over, so I'll leave it at that. I know Shawn is a pro, so he won't play if he can't and he will play well when he's back.

Lazy Links: November 10, 2008

After GO HOME BUF-FA-LO! weekend, I need a day off.

We're first in the division for the second.  The Sabres and Habs aren't going to start losing just for our benefit, though, and the Habs are a few games behind.  We gotta keep working hard.  It's a long season, and this is just the beginning.

Some links about the Bruins:

Chucky's Back!
What's going on in the rest of the league:
  • Fanhouse: Ollie the Goalie is playing in Washington for the first time.  He's played in 27% of the Caps' games.  Ever.
  • Puck Daddy: Shatner for the singing of the National Anthem
  • Deadspin:  When Deadspin is calling you out for not covering the NHL, you no longer deserve the title "Worldwide leader in sports."
  • Mirtle: Leads his story on Goalies in trouble with Turco.  Classic.
  • Chris "Elbows" Pronger has a blog: and posts answers to Q+A 4
Tim Thomas Campaign Headquarters Update:
Ok, I finally finished this.
Voting starts Wednesday.

Game 14 Recap: Bruins 3 Sabres 1 WOOOO

Kobasew IN.

Makes all the difference.
NHL.com picked Rick J. for the recap, they don't like NESN for some reason. Dafoomie will have the good stuff later, I'm sure.

In net for Boston: Manny Fernandez. From talking to people in the game, the consensus is that he's a solid goalie, but he's no Tim All-Star Thomas. Still, solid game from Manny.

I said I sent out some questions to a Sabres Blogger before the game. I didn't lie.
Here's Ryan from the Goose's Roost from before the game:
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, but I'd be glad to answer some questions. Very cool idea.
Q1: Who has impressed you so far?
1) If there's anyone on the Sabres who has impressed thus far it's Thomas Vanek. The last dozen or so games last year he took it to the next level, and he's carried this team at times to the point we call him "Atlas". As far as the Bruins, Marc Savard terrifies me at all times. I'm pretty sure he still averages over a point per game against the Sabres.
(Actually, Marc Savard scares you because he is a hypnotist.  He also has 1.19 pts/game against Buffalo lifetime, in 27 games, including last night's goal.)
Q2: How much easier is the loss to Atlanta to take when the Blue Jackets beat Montreal and Carolina beat the Senators last night?
2) Scoreboard watching helps after a tough loss, but it's still hard to be okay with how the team played last night. Montreal is going to be there all season, so it's good to see them lose to the West. I worry about giving up the extra points in the first place, but it's nice to stay atop the division for another day.
Q3: How much longer will Lindy Ruff Coach the Sabres for? Is that too long or not long enough?
3) Sabres GM Darcy Regier has said before that as long as he has a job Lindy will keep his. Both have their weaknesses, but Ruff really is a good fit for the team. Last year I had some complaints about leadership and direction, but so far he's handled the team really well. He hasn't worn out his welcome yet, and I don't expect it to happen for at least few more years.
Q4: Sucide wings: delicious or stupid-hot?
4) Suicide wings, as is the case with all wings in Buffalo, are delicious. The "buffalo wings" you get at other places have nothing on the Anchor Bar.
Q5: Who will win Tonight's game?
5) I think the Sabres have a good chance to win even if Lalime plays. It will depend on the defensive effort, which was pretty sad last night. Let's say 4-3 Buffalo in the shootout.

Thanks again to Ryan from The Goose's Roost for participating!  Sorry it didn't go to shootout for you.

Here's you post-game review, complete with video. Sorry if I'm crashing your browser. Please let me know if you are. RSS feeds and email readers may need to click through to get the full video goodness.

Ok, here's the first goal of the game and Rick Jeanneret's only Buffalo Goal call of the game:

0-1.
Dafoomie, get me some NESN highlights so I don't have to hear from not-jack-edwards.
Chuck Kobasew, in his second game of the season, decides to get on the assist board again in his second game of the season:

1-1.
So ends the first period.
Solid effort from Manny and Miller. Manny says "no mas" and means it.
Second period:
Chuck Kobasew is feeling good, decides "hey, why not score a goal" and keeps himself at 2 points per game:

2-1.
Then Kessel comes down, meaning business. Shoots, not quite there.

...but wait! That was just a sneaky pass to Savard, who buries it, check out how pumped Rick is in this clip:

3-1.
You almost feel sad for Rick. I want more NESN on nhl.tv, just for the Jack "SAVE BY (Manny) THOMAS" Edwards calls.

Anyhow, the third leaves us with no goals, no fights, one quasi-highlight-reel-worthy save by Manny. This image basically tells the story:

Here's the full game recap for the stuff you missed:

Thoughts from after the game:
  • Manny had to play eventually. The night after the Ottawa Citizen is talking about Thomas is as good as any.
  • Manny managed to win that game solidly. Aside from the first goal, he was in net and the pucks weren't. If you really want more from a goaltender, you're either crazy or not paying attention. C'mon, manny-bashers, tell me that he played a crappy game. Buffalo fans don't count.
  • Pominville's a joke. There were two Manny on NHL.tv, both on him. I'd post them, but the page would run EVEN SLOWER.
  • There was a Canadiens fan dressed in a banana at the game. Apparently, they celebrate Halloween a week late up in French Canadia.
  • Due to the way tie-breaking works, and because our loss to buffalo was in the shootout, we're currently tops in the division, but really it's just very close between Bruins, Sabres, Habs.  The Habs also haven't played as many games, and I wonder what effect that will have overall.

Home Record: 4-1-1

L10: A Look Back at the first ten games

In between the recap and the next preview (phew) I wanted to take a look at what people have been doing so far this year before games no longer count into the Last 10 Record and what they are on pace for:

Ok, for laughs the "on pace" is really what they should be doing for a full 82 games based on what they've done so far.  So, Kobasew is on pace for a killer season, assist-wise. Silly Cornelius, stats do not work like that. So what else can we learn from the table?
  • Kessel is like my NHL09 offline be a pro - He gets all his points from goals.
  • Only players that have been in all 10 games have had penalties scored on them.
  • Ference and Ryder have the best +/- right now, Chara is a measly -3.
  • Kessel's 37 shots tie him for 7th in the league and 6 goals tie him at 6th.
  • Savard's 34 shots tie him for 20th and 5 goals tie him for 16th. Savard also has 8 assists, good for a tie for 12th. Together, he is tied for 3rd in scoring with Mikko Koivu and Sidney Crosby with 13. Only Alexander Semin and Evgeni Malkin have scored more.
  • Tim Thomas has tied Martin Brodeur for shutouts on the season, though Brodeur is chasing history and Thomas just wants to keep the puck out of the net. Tim Thomas is also second behind only Ryan Miller with a 1.77 GAA and barely beats out (by .001) Tampa Bay's Mike Smith for highest save percentage with .943
  • Blake Wheeler has the most Games Played of any player debuting this year.
  • I am obsessed.
Notable Events from the last ten games:
  • Lucic puts Van Ryn through the glass:
  • Lucic! Lucic! Lucic!

  • In the immortal words of Jack Edwards, SAVE! AFTER! SAVE! BY! THOMAS!

  • Shootouts are terrifying now. I was honestly more happy that the game ended in an OT win when Wideman scored than anything else.
  • Some other stuff probably happened, check in the archives for what I missed here.

Overall: 5-2-3

Game 9 Recap: Bruins 1, Edmonton 0, SHUTOUT THOMAS

  • I missed most of this game because my roommates wanted to watch a movie, but tuned in for the OT. It was the most worthwhile part of the game. We've got another late game tonight, so I'm going to keep this short.
  • I'm glad that we beat the Oilers on their throwback night, since those throwback jerseys have beat us before. Suckers.
  • Dennis Wideman got his second goal of the season. Matt Hunwick is the only other Bruins D-man that has a goal, but seeing as it's early-esque in the season, I'm fine with that.
  • Thomas's shutout and our win is because of this save:

I was watching a soccer game earlier that night narrated by fans, and at the end they were calling the ref sweaty-faced and fat. Jack Edwards announces like a fan every night, but that's how we like it on NESN.
